There’s something incredibly comforting about chocolate pudding. Whether it’s the creamy texture, the deep, rich chocolate flavor, or the nostalgia it brings, chocolate pudding is a classic dessert that never goes out of style. While store-bought versions are convenient, nothing compares to the taste of homemade chocolate pudding made from scratch. In this post, I’m going to show you how to whip up the ultimate from-scratch chocolate pudding that’s perfect for any occasion. Plus, it’s so easy, you might never go back to the boxed stuff!
Why Make Chocolate Pudding from Scratch?
Instant pudding from the store has unnecessary ingredients that are not good for your body. When you make homemade pudding, you’ll quickly realize you that you do not need to go back! Once you taste the difference and see how easy it is, you’ll understand why making chocolate pudding from scratch is worth the extra effort. Homemade chocolate pudding is:
- Richer in flavor: When you use real cocoa and chocolate, you get a depth of flavor that you just can’t get from a mix.
- Creamier texture: The texture of homemade pudding is silky and smooth, without any of the artificial thickening agents that can make store-bought pudding gummy.
- Customizable: You can control the sweetness, adjust the chocolate intensity, and even add a splash of your favorite liqueur for a grown-up twist.
Gadgets You Will Need to Make Chocolate Pudding
- medium sized mixing bowl
- small stainless steel pot
- whisk
- pan or graham crust to allow your pudding to cool and set in
Ingredients
To make this decadent chocolate pudding from scratch, you’ll need just a few simple ingredients, most of which you probably already have in your pantry:
- ½ cup of sucanat – I get mine from Azure Standard or Thrive Market. You can substitute this for sugar, but you may not want to add as much.
- 2 TBSP unsweetened cocoa powder – This I also like to buy from Azure Standard or Thrive Market.
- ¼ cup cornstarch – This is something I like to buy organic from Thrive Market or I’ll use Bob’s Red Mill (whichever I have on hand!)
- pinch of salt – We love Redmond’s real salt
- 2 cups whole milk – We prefer to use local, raw milk
- ¼ cup room temperature butter
How to Make Homemade Chocolate Pudding from Scratch
- In a separate bowl, mix together all dry ingredients (cocoa powder, cornstarch, sucanat, and salt).
- In a pot, heat milk over medium-high heat while whisking in dry ingredients.
- Continuously stir so nothing burns to the bottom and to avoid lumps. When the pudding thickens, remove from heat.
- Stir in room temperature butter.
- Pour into a glass container (or a pie crust if making a pie) and allow to cool in the fridge.
