Ways to Reduce Household Toxins

September 30, 2018 By Meghan 3 Comments

“If you listen to your body when it whispers, you won’t have to hear it scream.”

Living toxin free is impossible. Unless you plan to go live off grid, in a huge forest, you’re going to come into contact with toxins somewhere.  Whether it’s the run off from pesticides sprayed on the park’s grass or smelling that vehicle’s exhaust that drove by, you’re going to come into contact with toxins somewhere. This is an issue because it’s not just about the environment, it’s also about our own health. But you can reduce toxins in and around your home so you and your family are safer.

We are exposed to toxins everywhere. From flame retardants sprayed on furniture to questionable ingredients in US cosmetics.  You really need to become a conscious consumer to avoid these things.  I hate the phrase “I used this and was fine”.  You have to consider that today’s generations are exposed to more toxins in more ways than ever before.

Where Toxins Come From

First off, let’s look at where toxin exposure comes from:

  • Air
  • Water
  • Food
  • Drugs & Tobacco
  • Cleaning Products
  • Household Products
  • Cosmetics
  • Radiation (Wifi, Cell Phones, 5G Towers)

As a result, you’re exposed to toxins everywhere! Although you can’t avoid all of these in modern society, you can avoid the ones you know about. You really need to become a conscious consumer to avoid these things. I hate the phrase “I used this and was fine”. You have to consider that today’s generations are exposed to more toxins than ever before.

So what’s one to do? Some things we do in our house are:

  • Store food in glassware
  • Use cast iron or stainless cookware
  • Buying more cotton or other naturally occurring fabrics for clothes
  • Owning air purifying plants
  • Making condiments
  • Eating organic or non-packaged produce
  • Avoiding conventional cleaners or detergents
  • Opting for natural skin & hair care products
  • Not wearing shoes inside
  • Put babies in cloth diapers
  • Drinking out of non-plastic water bottles

Keep in mind, we didn’t make these changes all at once. It is an on going process that we are still tweaking to work for our family today & we have a lot of room to grow! When you start your journey or if you’re already on it, remember that one brand or way may work & another may not. But don’t give up hope! As with everything, there’s some learning to be done. Things were not perfect for us from the get go.

What are some things you would like to change? What are you already doing?

There’s something so comforting about a slice of chocolate pudding pie—rich, creamy, and full of nostalgic flavors.
