Look for something positive in each day, even if some days you have to look a little harder.
Do you deal with chapped lips during the winter or after a sunburn on your face? I know I have! Some of the ingredients in conventional lip balms aren’t helping heal your lips like the claim.
Avoid lip balms with any of the following:
- Petrolatum, Mineral Oil, Petroleum: a byproduct of oil production, it was initially found as residue leftover in the barrels. Suffocates your lips instead of moisturizing them.
- Parabens: you’ll see these listed as (prefix)paraben. Mimics estrogen (a promoter of breast cancer cells) in the body
- Dyes & Fragrance: can contain hundreds of ingredients you don’t know about and that the company doesn’t have to tell you. Irritates your skin, causing them to be dryer.
- Salicylic Acid: same stuff used to dry out acne. Also, dries out your lips.
Look for plant butters and oils! Cocoa butter, mango butter, coconut oil, almond oil, etc are great. They help to nourish, hydrate, and heal your lips. Take a peak for natural waxes too! I personally use beeswax in my DIY version. Vitamin E oil can also help your lips regain their moisture after being dry or damaged.
Here is my DIY version. I have taken Plant Therapy’s DIY recipe and adapted it to include cocoa butter.
- 1tsp Beeswax Pearls
- 1tsp Shea Butter
- 1tsp Cocoa Butter
- 1tsp Coconut Oil
- 5-10 drops of Essential Oils
- 4 lip balm tubes
Place all ingredients except essential oils and place on a double boiler or a heatable glass bowl in a pot of shimmering water. Once everything is melted, add essential oils.
I find that if I use ‘hot’ oils (I’m not sure if this is the correct phrase, but I’m talking oils like peppermint, eucalyptus, etc) that I only need a few drops to smell it but other oils (like lavender or vanilla) I need to use more. So far I have done no essential oils, lavender alone, and peppermint vanilla lip balms. It’s a quick and easy project too!
Thank you for reading guys!
