DIY Natural, Non-Staining Homemade Deodorant without Baking Soda

If you’ve ever struggled with underarm irritation or yellow stains on your favorite shirts, you’re not alone. Conventional deodorants, and even many “natural” ones, can be full of toxic ingredients, baking soda, or heavy oils that stain clothes and upset your skin’s natural pH level.  But the good news is, this perfect natural deodorant recipe is here! You’ll see that this natural deodorant cream is not only affordable but also quick to make (10 minutes!), easy to create, and gentle enough for sensitive skin.

This DIY deodorant cream is made with tapioca starch, magnesium hydroxide, and skin-loving oils to create a smooth, creamy texture that absorbs moisture and neutralizes odor-causing bacteria without clogging your sweat glands or leaving residue. Best of all, it’s non-staining, baking soda free, and made with natural ingredients that truly work.

Why Make Your Own Deodorant Cream?

A lot of people are starting to question what’s really in their conventional deodorants. Common store-bought options can contain aluminum, synthetic fragrances, parabens, and other harmful chemicals that block your sweat glands or irritate delicate underarm skin. Some even worry about long-term risks such as breast cancer and hormone disruption from regular antiperspirant use.

Your armpits contain lymph nodes, which are one of the body’s most important detox pathways. Whenever you sweat, you’re helping your body release toxins – a process you don’t want to block. When you stop sweating with commercial deodorants, those toxins have to find another route. This can lead to skin irritation, odor buildup, or even hormonal imbalance. Switching to a homemade natural deodorant lets your body sweat the way it’s meant to, while still smelling fresh.

Plus, it’s so much cheaper to make your own toxin-free deodorant! A few tablespoons of tapioca starch, jojoba oil, and magnesium hydroxide go a long way. And you can customize it with essential oils of your choice — though this version uses my favorite blend of lavender, lemon, and peppermint for a crisp, clean scent that lasts all day.

The Active Ingredients (and Why They Work)

This recipe uses simple but effective ingredients that work beautifully together for sensitive skin.

  • Tapioca starch (or arrowroot powder) – Helps absorb moisture and keeps the texture silky and smooth. Both tapioca and arrowroot are great if you have sensitive skin or find baking soda deodorants irritating.
  • Magnesium hydroxide – The star ingredient! This gentle mineral neutralizes odor-causing bacteria without disturbing your skin’s pH level. It’s effective, non-toxic, and works even on hot, sweaty days.
  • Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride (MCT oil) – A lightweight oil derived from organic coconut oil, rich in fatty acids and antimicrobial properties. It prevents staining (unlike regular coconut oil) and gives the cream its smooth consistency.
  • Jojoba oil – Closely resembles your skin’s natural sebum, helping to balance, soothe, and moisturize sensitive skin. You’ll notice I use this in many of my DIY recipes because it’s just that good.
  • Beeswax pellets – Adds structure and keeps the cream semi-solid but still scoopable. It also helps the deodorant stay on longer without melting in warm weather. I use pellets because they’re smaller and easier to get a small amount.
  • Vegetable glycerin – Adds a boost of hydration and helps bind the powders into a silky-smooth cream.
  • Peppermint, Lemon, and Lavender Essential Oil – This trio provides a natural deodorizing and antibacterial boost. Lavender soothes skin, lemon brightens and refreshes, and peppermint offers that cooling, clean feeling you’ll love.

This batch makes about 2.4 oz (68 g) — perfect for one small glass jar or deodorant container.

Ingredients

  • Tapioca starch (or arrowroot powder) – 17 g (~2 Tbsp)
  • Magnesium hydroxide – 14 g (~1 Tbsp)
  • Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride (MCT oil) – 19 g (~1 ½ Tbsp)
  • Jojoba oil – 7 g (~1 ½ tsp)
  • Beeswax – 7 g (~1 tsp)
  • Vegetable glycerin – 3.5 g (~¾ tsp)
  • essential oil of your choice – 15 drops

How to Make Your Own Deodorant Cream

1. Melt oils & wax
In a double boiler, gently heat beeswax, MCT oil, and jojoba oil on low to medium heat until fully melted.

2. Combine powders
In a small bowl, whisk together tapioca starch and magnesium hydroxide until smooth.

3. Combine & mix
Remove melted oils from heat. Slowly add the powder blend while whisking or stirring continuously.

4. Add glycerin
Stir in vegetable glycerin while the mixture is still warm — this helps emulsify and smooth the texture.

5. Add essential oils
Once slightly cooled (below 120°F), add lavender, lemon, and peppermint essential oils and stir again.

6. Pour & set
Transfer your mixture into a clean glass jar. Allow it to set at room temperature until creamy and semi-solid.

How to Use Your Own Homemade Deodorant

Scoop a pea-sized amount with clean fingers or a bamboo applicator and gently massage into each underarm. It absorbs quickly, leaving your skin soft and lightly scented.

If you’re switching from traditional deodorants, your body may need a bit of trial time (usually a week or so) as your sweat glands and hair follicles adjust and detox from toxic chemicals. During this short period, you may notice extra moisture or odor — totally normal and temporary! (If that’s you, check out my post on how to do an armpit detox!)

Why This Recipe Works (and Won’t Stain!)

Unlike baking soda or soda deodorants, which can raise your skin’s pH and cause redness or burning, magnesium hydroxide is gentle and neutral. It keeps odour-causing bacteria in check without irritation.

Using MCT oil instead of organic coconut oil prevents oily buildup that causes yellow stains. The result is non-greasy, non-staining, and super effective.

And because it uses beeswax instead of candelilla wax, it stays creamy and stable. You won’t need to re-stir or refrigerate unless your home is very warm.

Troubleshooting & Tips for this Natural Deodorant Recipe Without Baking Soda

If your deodorant cream doesn’t come out just right the first time, feel free to remelt it on low heat.

  • Too soft? Add a bit more tapioca starch (1 tsp at a time).
  • Too firm? Add ½ tsp MCT oil and stir again.
  • Clumpy texture? Mix longer or use a small whisk.
  • Irritation? Reduce peppermint or switch to gentler oils like chamomile.
  • Good idea: In hot weather, store your deodorant cream in the fridge.
  • Shelf life: 6–12 months in a cool, dry place.
